Captain’s Column: Brocton (H)

Club Captain Matty Fenton has praised the impact of Chris Herbert and his management team ahead of today’s crunch match against Brocton.

Not even 12 months into the role and the impact of Herbert since his appointment has been noticeable with 1874 still within a chance of fighting for the Midland Football League title. A stark contrast to their fortunes last season, which saw 9 months without a victory, prior to Chris and his management team’s arrival.

“There’s definitely a feel good factor around the place in comparison to where we were 12 months ago.”

“Chris and his team have brought new ideas and new faces to the club and created a team we think connect with the fans really well.”

“1874 enter today’s game off the back of a professional 1-0 away victory, and Fenton was quick to stress the importance of grinding out results between now and the end of the season.”

“Those are the games we’ll look back on at the end of the season and that’s what football is about.

“We had to get back to basics after the Dudley game and we know it wasn’t pretty to watch but we ground out a victory to put us back on track before a huge game.”

“We have to play our circumstances perfectly from now till the end of the season, as our target since the start of the season is still possible.”

Today’s opponents Brocton currently occupy 2nd position in the league, having played more fixtures than ’74. The ’74 skipper spoke of the importance of today’s game and has urged the fans to turn up in their numbers to make Townfield a difficult place for today’s visitors to come to.

“The lads know what they’re doing ahead of the game and we’ve gone through the formation and tactics in training on Thursday.”

“We have to treat it like every other game and make sure we do what we do best and don’t get disheartened when things aren’t going our way.”

Brocton are a very strong side and will have their spells of play, and we need to stick together during those times in the match.”

“It’s massively important we get the backing from the fans from minute 1 on Saturday. We feel it as players on the pitch and it gives us that extra bit of confidence and edge in our play.”

“Townfield has an opportunity to put Brocton on the back foot on Saturday and we need to use that to our advantage.”

“The away fans at their place were unbelievable that day and that eventually carried us over the line, same again Saturday and the lads will respond to it I’m certain.”
