Northwich Flixton Villa v 1874 – match abandoned

1874 Northwich’s Cheshire Senior Cup First Round tie at Northwich Flixton Villa was abandoned 12 minutes from time following a horrific injury to Adam Foy. A halt was called to proceedings while the 1874 captain received a lengthy spell of treatment on the Valley Road pitch before being stretchered from the ground and being taken to hospital having suffered a suspected broken leg.

The preceding 78 minutes on a wet Wednesday evening had seen an open entertaining game between two evenly matched teams.

Stuart Wellstead opened the scoring in the 30th minute, racing onto a through ball he rounded the Villa keeper to shoot into an unguarded net. The home side were level 5 minutes later when Abukobar Sheego scored from the penalty spot.

Matty Ward restored 1874’s advantage in the 69th minute when he forced the ball home during a goal mouth scramble following a corner. Poor defending allowed Sheego to score his second equaliser of the night four minutes before the game was abandoned with the scores tied at 2-2.
