1874 Northwich are thrilled to announce that record goal scorer, Scott McGowan, has agreed to return to the club this summer.
Scott, 36, first joined in the 2016/17 season from Congleton Town. During his time at the club, he has netted an immense 139 goal in 214 appearances.
McGowan finished his first season at the club by scoring the winning goal in the 2017 Mid-Cheshire Senior Final against rivals Northwich Victoria. He then netted 42 goals in 59 matches in our record breaking 2017/18 season, helping the team to the Third Qualifying Round of the FA Cup and the semi-final of the FA Vase.
Scotty only continued his great form thereafter; he was a key member of the 2019 North West Counties Football League Challenge Cup winning side. He passed the 100-goal mark with a hattrick against his former club, Congleton Town, in the semi-final.
He also scored 30 goals in the curtailed 2019/20 campaign, which saw us be 8 points clear with a game in hand at the top of the North West Counties Premier Division.
At the start of the 2020/21 season, Scott joined Nantwich Town in the Northern Premier League Premier Division, before returning to the club for the 2021/22 campaign. He kicked-off the season by scoring a hattrick in the North West Counties Football League Challenge Cup Final to help the club retain the trophy. Later in the season he had a short spell with Macclesfield in the North West Counties Premier Division, before departing to join Stockport Town until this summer.
Chris Herbert spoke on his new signing: “Scotty guarantees goals, and the way we want to play we need a Scotty McGowan, we have been speaking for some time and now we have him in. His love for the club was big in getting him back to 1874 Northwich, he is a fans favourite. He was always a thorn in my side when I’ve had teams that have played against him, I’ve even tried to sign him a few times. But now we get chance to work together and he will get goals and put defences on the back foot.”
