Ahead of this weekend’s curtain raiser in the Emirates FA Cup, 1874 Northwich’s assistant manager Steve Burr has spoken about his excitement at getting back in the dugout.
The Green’s begin this season’s cup campaign away at Stockport Town, and with their previous few cup campaigns falling at the first hurdle, Burr understands the importance of a win for the club tomorrow afternoon.
“I’m really looking forward to being back in and around the dugout. Everyone has made me feel very welcome and hopefully together with Chris and the team we can create a winning mentality around the football club again.”
“For every club a cup run is important as it generates money. If we can have a cup run this season it would be great for the club and the supporters.”
Burr arrived at 1874 this summer after agreeing to team up again with manager Chris Herbert, after the pair worked together at Chester FC. After a rigorous pre-season schedule, Burr spoke about the strength of the new-look squad that has been assembled as the team head into the first competitive match of the season.
“I have been very impressed with the squad that the gaffer has been able to assemble. We’ve got a very good mix of experienced lads and young lads and we will hopefully continue the form from pre-season into Saturday and then the league campaign.”
1874 head into tomorrow’s game on the back of a resounding 6-1 win away against neighbours Witton Albion on Tuesday, where young striker Joel Jones netted four of the six goals. Burr, a striker himself, was quick to praise the youngster and hopes that he will find himself amongst the top goalscorers across the league this season.
“He works his socks off and his work rate is fantastic. He gets himself in some fantastic positions as we have seen across pre-season so far and there’s nothing better than being a striker and banging the goals in as he has been doing.”
“He’s a young lad that’s still learning the game and the other players that Chris has brought in will help him develop and as a whole, the squad really compliments each other.”
Finally, Steve had this message to pass onto the fans ahead of the start of the season.
“The more fans we get at the games the better for the lads. I know how much Saturday means to the fans and how much they want the club to start to point in the right direction and start winning games because as a supporter if you win it makes the week so much better. We know wherever we go we will get good support and we want to put on a show for them each and every week.”
