Tony Targets Top Spot

During late January the club was proud to announce the re-signing of goalkeeper Tony Aghayere from Padiham. Tony, who played a pivotal role in the Colne side of 2015/16 which won the league said he’s, “delighted” to re-join the club after testing himself earlier in the season at Mossley in the Evo-Stik North.

Tony, who spent large amounts of his youth career at Premier League side Burnley said, “I see a lot of similarities in this team and the team that got promoted when I was at Colne, lots of hard work and good football which gets results.”

Speaking at training on Thursday with Club Media Officer Matt Waters, Tony revealed,”If it’s not this year we win a cup then it has to be next year with the aim to challenge for the league and get on a cup run which I believe we can do.”

After joining the club in pre-season, Tony decided to test himself at a higher level, signing for EvoStik North side Mossely. When speaking to Aghayere, he told me, “When I decided to go to Mossley, Wayne Goodison was really positive with me. He wished me well and said that if it didn’t quite work out, I would be welcome back at 1874. That stuck with me, it does have a massive impact on a player knowing that a manager wants to invest in you and both Wayne and Paul have been great since returning.

When asked if he had any messages to the fans, he said, “They can expect me to give my all to the club. I want to stay here for as long as I can do and ultimately perform my best for the club. This is a massive opportunity for me to stake my claim on the gloves and I’m looking forward to working with a fantastic coach in Dave Stephenson who can help me develop my game.”

You can see Tony play on this Friday as we are back in action in the Macron cup at home against Barnoldswick Town.
