Ahead of the league campaign getting underway this weekend, club captain Matty Fenton has spoken about the importance of togetherness both on and off the pitch, as the team aim for promotion.
“Our goal this season is to win the league. We are putting the right practices into place to achieve this goal, but this is obviously a lot easier said than done.”
“The buy in from everyone involved with 1874 will be determine where we finish. If we all pull in the same direction, then who knows what we can achieve. The fans will be vital in games this season in pushing us over the line, as well as the players and staff maintaining that hunger on and off the pitch.”
Heading into his fourth season with the club, Fenton will play a major role in ensuring that the players keep high standards on and off the pitch. After initially being handed the armband during 1874 legends Matt Woolley and Mark Jones’ caretaker stint in charge, the central defender has continued with the captain’s armband and has spoken of his delight at having the opportunity to lead his home side again this season.
“It’s always an honour to put the shirt on for this club, let alone the armband. Growing up in Northwich and now being made captain after Wool is really humbling and I feel a special connection with the whole club.”
“My role as captain this season will be to relay the information given to us by the management team on the pitch, keeping the standards high in the dressing room and continuing the dedication all the boys have put in from day one.”
“We’re all on this journey together and I see myself no differently to the boys I’m playing next to on the pitch. We need multiple leaders on the pitch and I think we have that this year.”
1874 head into the weekend’s fixture against Lichfield full of confidence after positive results against both Witton Albion and more recently Stockport Town in the FA Cup. After a season of disappointment last year, Fenton is determined to turn the fortunes of the club around and has issued a rallying cry to the 1874 fans to play their part.
“We all know how last season went but I’m certain this season will be different. The Gaffer has brought an exciting style of play to the team and the right players to complement that style, with a forward-thinking approach.”
“Having said that, like we saw on Saturday, games don’t always go to plan and we have the play the game that is in front of us. If that means slowing the game down and being consolidated as a team, then we will be. The team showed a real togetherness on Saturday and that needs to last throughout the season.”
“As players we really feel the buzz from the fans on a Matchday. The fans can always have a massive impact on the outcome of a result by being that 12th man and their support is going to be massive throughout this season and doesn’t go unnoticed.”
“The league starts Saturday and this is where it really matters. Bringing the club back to where it should be is our number 1 goal this season and we’ll achieve this together.”
