From the Dugout with Chris Herbert – Lichfield City (H)

1874 Northwich kick off their Midland’s league campaign this weekend, after a successful outing last weekend in the FA Cup. 1874 boss Chris Herbert was pleased with the professional nature of the performance and is hoping to make a statement of intent to the rest of the league when Lichfield visit The Creative Hut Stadium tomorrow.

“It was a good professional performance (against Stockport Town). We were playing a team that had already had 2 competitive league games before we played them, so they were ahead of us in that aspect, and they are a very well drilled and dangerous team with a good manager.”

“We knew they would stay in the game and while we were on top first half it was important to get them goals. We then stood firm and put our bodies on the line, which is a great trait to have.”

Lichfield, who narrowly missed out on promotion last season, will be one of the early season favourites to challenge for this year’s title. Herbert spoke about the tough start that his side have been handed.

“Lichfield like ourselves and Brocton who we play Tuesday night are all the favourites for the league, add the FA cup game last week and the Fa cup game on the 17th at Longridge into the equation and we have the toughest start possible.”

“On the flip side, it’s a great chance for us to make a statement of intent.”

“Lichfield were unbelievably unlucky not to get promoted last season and lost in the play offs to someone the finished 7 points above in the league. So, they will be going all out to go one step further this season starting with us. We will be prepared as best we can.”

Saturday’s game marks the first home match of the season, and Herbert hopes that the vocal support at The Creative Hut Stadium can spur the side on to turn it into a fortress throughout the upcoming campaign.

“As previously stated, our fans will win us points this season, like Saturday when the lads needed that little bit of energy the support from the fans give them that boost by being loud and proud.”

“Our home ground needs to be a fortress; we don’t want any team to enjoy coming to us and playing us and the fans can help with that.

“We are a scalp for these teams this season and we need to be professional and do our jobs and keep grinding them 3 points out.”
