Club legend Mark Jones has officially signed on for his ninth consecutive season with 1874 Northwich, reaffirming his deep-rooted commitment to the fan-owned club as they prepare for a fresh campaign following a heart-breaking defeat in the playoff final against Shifnal Town.
Jones, who joined the club in 2016, has become a fixture at Townfield, amassing 287 appearances and earning widespread respect for his leadership, consistency, and unwavering dedication. Jones, affectionately known as “Jonah” among supporters, has not only been a stalwart in defence and midfield but also stepped up as interim manager on two occasions in previous campaigns alongside fellow veteran Matt Woolley during turbulent periods for the club.
On signing for another season, Jonah said:
“Of course losing play off final was disappointing but overall looking at the season and what we achieved with a nearly complete new team is a great achievement and massive credit to Chris and his team for making us as strong as we are.”
“Going forward it’s important we strengthen where needed and am sure we will do well again this season hopefully one better than last season, we know a lot more about the league teams’ styles of play so can help us prepare even better.”
Jones’ standout moments include a heroic performance during the club’s memorable FA Vase run in 2018, where he scored a crucial goal against Pontefract Collieries in the fourth round.
Over the years, he has earned multiple accolades, including Supporters’, Players’, and Manager’s Player of the Season awards. As 1874 Northwich look to bounce back and mount a promotion challenge, Jones’s presence will be vital in guiding a younger squad.
