1874’s TWELVE MATCH UNBEATEN RUN CONTINUES

1874 NORTHWICH FC 1 V 1 CITY OF LIVERPOOL FC

1874 provided an excellent battling performance to maintain their unbeaten start to the season despite falling behind in the first minute of this game.

1874 were still without long term casualties, Mark Jones, Danny Thomas, Joe Woolley and Ryan Jackson for the start of their latest fixture but for this difficult fixture against a strong City Of Liverpool outfit 1874 were also without the services of Danny Meadowcroft and Sam Hind and so it was always going to be a “tougher than normal” ask to play two “big games” in the space of 48 hours.

So the management duo opted for a different line up with Kyle Riley, Jack Lever, Kazim Waite-Jackson and Ben Woods all in the starting lineup with Adam Whitlock and Taylor Kennerley being among the substitutes.

A tough encounter was expected and this was confirmed when the visitors took the lead in the first minute when 1874 lost the ball on their left hand side allowing City of Liverpool to quickly put the ball into the penalty area and Karl Noon was quick to seize the opportunity to open the scoring.

However, undeterred 1874 started to press forward at every opportunity in search for an equaliser and went close on a number of occasions whilst the back line of Jackson, Pritchard and Lever dealt comfortably with the visitors attacks.

1874 created the best scoring chances but a combination of safe handling by the visitors’ keeper, off target efforts and the woodwork resulted in 1874 still trailing by the one goal at the interval.

At the start of the second half Taylor Kennerley replaced Woods and he quickly started to have an impact on the game as his foraging runs on the wing gave the City Of Liverpool defence something different to think about and this was increased when a second substitute was introduced on the hour mark as Adam Whitlock replaced Waite-Jackson.

1874 were very much running the game now and an equalizing goal was very much on the cards but as much as McGowan and Riley worked up front for 1874 the openings didn’t appear but to 1874’s credit they never stopped in their belief that they would get something out of this game. They were denied a penalty when the referee “over-ruled” a decision by one of his assistants and then in the final quarter the visiting keeper again came to the rescue of his side by saving well from McGowan.

The pressure continued and in the 88th minute this pressure was rewarded when the referee did award a penalty after a clear foul in the box and McGowan stepped up confidently to bury the ball into the back of the net for a much-deserved share of the spoils

1874: Hall; Connor; Jackson; Pritchard; Lever; Parker; Waite-Jackson; M Woolley (capt); Riley; McGowan & Woods. Subs Kennerley (for Woods 45); Whitlock (for Waite-Jackson 60) & Beadle (for Parker 82) unused sub Clayton & Spencer)
