1874 NORTHWICH 2-2 OSSETT TOWN FA CUP 3RD QUAL RD 30TH SEPT 2017

There’s never a dull moment watching 1874!

For a team which has made a habit out of scoring late goals in cup ties 1874 Northwich conceded in the 90th minute to give visitors Ossett Town a 2-1 lead in their nerve shredding FA Cup tie.

With their opponents still celebrating their “winning” goal and passage into the fourth qualifying round, 1874 responded in typical never give up fashion and came from behind for the second time to take a memorable cup tie to a reply.

This Emirates FA Cup third qualifying round tie got off to a dramatic start. The ball was played into the 1874 area where it hit a defender on the back and fell invitingly to Alex Peterson who drilled it home in the 4th minute.

The Evostik League side was the sharper of the two teams in the first half reacting to loose balls quicker and moving the ball around smartly, although they created few clear cut chances as the 1874 rearguard was outstanding throughout. Goalkeeper Greg Hall was also in fine form saving well to tip an Ashley Jackson shot over the bar and also keeping out a Matt Templeman header.

1874’s midfeield trio of Matt Woolley, Mark Jones and Jake Parker started to wrest control of the game from Ossett, and in the 26th minute Scott McGowan broke down the right, as he entered the penalty area he rounded Ossett goalkeeper Leigh Overton. Faced with several covering defenders guarding the goal he pulled the ball back to Jones, whose shot went wide of the target.

On the stroke of half time Taylor Kennerley floated a cross from the right into the Ossett area where it was met at the far post by Parker who could only head into the side netting.

The second half started amidst a very heavy rain storm which soaked the St Luke’s Barton Stadium pitch making conditions difficult for both sides.

1874 leveled the score in the 58th minute. As an attack was breaking down McGowan won the ball back and passed to Paul Connor on the right wing. His cross into the heart of the Ossett area found Jones who with a flick of his head guided the ball into the net.

Both sides traded chances throughout the second half, Hall saving a Peterson shot and being quick off his line to block a Kai Hancock shot while Ryan Ferguson sent a diving header wide.

Overton was also kept busy cutting out a number of dangerous crosses from Kennerley, saving bravely at the feet of McGowan. Overton also kept out 1874’s best chance in the 67th minute driving to his left to palm away McGowan’s shot after he raced onto a Jack Pritchard through ball. Some of the sting had been taken out of the shot by a perfectly timed challenge by Issac Assenso as McGowan was in the action of shooting.

As the game entered its final minute Hancock broke down the left, whipped a low cross into the 1874 six yard box where Peterson applied the finishing touch for the Yorkshiremen to start celebrating reaching the 4th qualifying round, but this 1874 team do not know when they are beaten.

Straight from the kick off, the ball was played forward to Danny Meadowcroft, now playing as an emergency forward; he laid the ball off into the path of Adam Whitlock. The substitute put all thought of the effort he blazed over the bar moments earlier out of his mind, steadied himself and rifled the ball into the back of the net.

In the final minutes of stoppage time 1874 laid siege on the Ossett goal but could not find he break through to avoid a replay for the 4th time in this season’s FA Cup campaign.
