HANDY HIND NETS 74 REPLAY
BY GARRY CLARKE
MOSSLEY 2-2 1874 NORTHWICH FA CUP 1st QUAL ROUND
3RD SEPTEMBER 2017
Twice coming from behind to force a replay with higher ranked opposition, this is an 1874 Northwich team which does not know when it is beaten.
Going into the game the odds were always in favour of a draw. In both of their previous round ties 1874 have drawn the original game before going through in a replay while both of Mossley’s home Evostik League First Division North games have ended all square.
As always, excellent support from the 1874 faithful
An open game which kept Seel Park’s highest attendance of the season entertained on a sunny afternoon in the Pennines had many spectators struggling to guess which the Evostik League team was and which plied their trade in the HSL Premier.
Mossley asserted early pressure on 1874 without looking like scoring, but 1874 quickly played their way into the game and enjoyed the greater share of possession and for large parts were the more dangerous side.
Mossley’s Oliver Martin was the busier of the two keepers in the first half, he reacted well to keep out a Scott McGowan flick at point blank range, saved shots from Jake Parker and Taylor Kennerley.
The home side were reduced to ten men in the 38th minute when Adam Latham tangled with Jack Pritchard grabbing him around the shoulders and dragging him away from the ball. After consulting with his assistant referee Mr. Buck brandished a red card in Latham’s direction.
Against the run of play Mossley took the lead on the stroke of half time. A free kick was lofted into 1874’s area, goalkeeper Greg Hall, who had been relatively untroubled bar from comfortably catching a few crosses and corners, came a long way off his line and under challenge from Liam Ellis dropped the ball. In the ensuing scramble Ellis was bundled over by Hall, after initially playing advantage the referee pointed to the spot after a Mossley shot had been blocked.
Jack Tuohy converted the spot kick sending Hall the wrong way.
Five minutes into the second half Mason Duffy unleashed a long range shot which Hall tipped over the bar before confidently dealing with the resulting corner.
1874 leveled the score on the hour mark. Mossley were struggling to clear the ball from their area, it fell to Sam Hind who slammed the ball home.i
A few minutes later Kennerely shot just wide of the target, before a sweeping length of the pitch move by Mossley ended with Keenan Quansah’s shot being saved by Hall. However, Hall was unable to prevent Ellis ending another Mossley break with a goal in the 79th minute, as the Mossley man held off defenders challenges to slot the ball into the net.
With Mossley dreaming of a place in the 2nd qualifying round, 1874 refused to give up and continued to work hard and were rewarded in the 90th minute.
In a packed penalty area, Martin reacted well to stop a McGowan shot, however he could not keep hold of the ball, allowing it to fall at the feet of Hind who gleefully tapped it into the net from close range.
With a replay set for St Luke’s Barton Stadium being planned for Tuesday, all three of 1874’s substitutes had an opportunity to win the game in stoppage time. Clevon Beadle had a header saved low down by Martin, while Kyle Riley and Kazim Waite-Jackson both had shots blocked by desperate defenders.
