1874 Northwich 0-5 Bootle: Second Half Misery for 74 as Bucks Run Riot

by Jack Owen

A disaster of a second half for 1874 Northwich condemned the Greens to their heaviest defeat of the season.

The first half was positive, and controlled by 1874 who dominated the ball constantly looking for a way through the resolute back line of the visitors who managed to keep 1874 at an arms length without looking like creating many chances of their own.

The best chances were early in the half for ‘74 as Lee Knight and Mike Koral were denied efforts on goal inside the area.

Matt Woolley also had a chance when he followed up on the half volley from outside the area, but the Bootle keeper held well.

James Ormrod hooked an effort which had the keeper beaten but also dropped wide of the post, Callum Gardner then cut inside from the left wing and hit a powerful effort goal bound which was blocked by a brave header from the Bootle defence.

‘74 went in the happier of the two teams, but when the second half started, almost instantly, and against the run of play of the first half, Bootle took the lead,.Tom Peterson timed his run to perfection and glanced a header past a helpless Aghayere in the ‘74 goal.

It went from bad to worse moments later, Markell Fouldes caught the Bootle winger who burst into the area and a penalty was given. Ben Hodkinson sent Aghayere the wrong way to double the Bucks lead and give ‘74 a mountain to climb.

With momentum having swung dramatically in the direction of the visitors, the next goal was crucial to the outcome of the game. With ‘74 chasing the game now it left gaps to exploit, and a swift counter-attack lead by the impressive Hodkinson found Connor Millington who had the simplest of tasks to slide the ball home from 6 yards.

‘74 mounted the pressure on the Bootle goal, but they stood firm, and with 10 minutes remaining they compounded our misery: another rapid counter-attack from the visitors found Millington unmarked again in the area, and he thundered an effort into the roof of the net to make it four.

Jack McGowan added Bootles fifth in added time, scoring a deflected effort inside the area which left Aghayere stranded.

A day to forget for 1874 before they make their FA Trophy debut tomorrow.
