Recap

After four wins in a row, 1874’s 100%-win record was brought to an abrupt end against Irlam as the visitors took all 3 points after a 4-2 victory.

1874 lined up, with the returning Matt Russell replacing the injured Ryan Mitchell, while Nick Ward stayed between the posts as the club is still awaiting international clearance for Tony Aghayere.

The first half started slowly with 1874 off the pace and found themselves 1-0 down after Mark Jones failed to clear an incoming cross which found Nicholas and he converted past Ward.

1874 made their first change on the half hour mark as Mark Jones hobbled off after colliding with Jordan Buckley. Soon after the greens were gifted a golden opportunity as Sams Hare found some space in the penalty area but his scuffed effort didn’t trouble the Irlam goal.

On the stroke of half time Irlam doubled their lead. Jordan Southworth worked his way past Mike Koral and his effort lobbed Ward who watched the ball sail over his head and into the goal.

After the break 1874 made their second change seeing Taylor Kennerley be replaced by Lee Knight as 1874 tried to salvage something from the game.

However, it wasn’t meant to be. Five minutes into the half Irlam extended their lead to three. A stunning finish from Southworth found its way past the outstretched Ward leaving 1874 with a mountain to climb.

The greens made their final sub 10 minutes into the half as Callum Gardner replaced Harry Cain who also went off injured. Gardner helped 1874 pull one back as his free kick found the head of Lee Jackson making it 3-1.

1874 had several chances to cut Irlam’s advantage to one as a Scott McGowan header bounced off the crossbar and Lee Knights effort was saved at point blank range to deny the hosts. However, it was Captain Matt Woolley who managed to break through the resilient Irlam defence to give 1874 a real chance of securing a point 10 minutes from time.

Unfortunately for 1874 there was to be no grandstand finish as with almost the last kick of the game, Irlam made it four with a free kick past Ward to give Irlam all 3 points and a win which saw them climb to fourth in the table.

For 1874 however it sees us drop to third in the table, one point off top spot with our next league game away to Runcorn Town.
