Recap
1874 Northwich 0-3 Leek Town: ’74 beaten at Townfield by clinical Leek.
By Jack Owen
1874 found themselves on the end of a perfect away performance from visitors Leek Town, who collected a deserved three points over the Greens in the first competitive meeting between the two sides.
Wayne Goodison and Paul Bowyer made a few changes to the side, James Ormrod came in along side Matt Woolley to offer some more physicality in the midfield, and Ash Woods lead the line in the absence of Scott McGowan.
A fast ‘74 start seemed to catch Leek cold. Joe Woolley had a shot at goal in the first minute which was blocked for a corner, and moments later Lee Knight powered a low cross from the right into the six yard box only inches away from a stretching Ash Woods.
The first goal of the game came just after the half hour mark, Will Saxon ran the length of the Townfield pitch to square the ball to Trickett-Smith who had the simplest of tasks to tap home with Aghayere stranded.
This came slightly against the run of play, and now ‘74 had to chase the game. Lee Knight cut inside from the left and his effort was held comfortably by the Leek keeper Daniel Roberts. Jake Parker had the next chance, collecting Matt Woolley’s pass into his feet and hitting a powerful effort on the spin which skimmed the post as it went behind.
The second half got off to the worst start possible for 1874, and it was Trickett-Smith again who was on hand for a simple tap in unmarked inside the ‘74 penalty area following a quick break from the visitors.
Jake Parker went close to imitating his Goal of the Season against Winsford from a few seasons back as he hit a half volley from 25 yards which narrowly dropped over the crossbar.
Leek stood firm now with their two goal lead, with the impressive Oliver Harrison at the heart of it all for the visitors.
Joe Duckworth was soon introduced from the bench to replace Ash Woods, and the substitute’s pace worried the defenders seconds after his introduction when he looked to chase down Russell’s pass in behind the Leek defence. However, Roberts was out quickly to claim at his feet and Leek heeded the warning this provided and adjusted accordingly.
Mike Koral stung the palms of the keeper in added time with ‘74 pushing to try and get something out of the game. This pushing left gaps at the back however, and the next goal fell to the visitors who capped a great performance with substitute Rob Stevenson placing a shot in to the bottom right corner after ghosting between the two ‘74 defenders.
Well beaten on the night, but not by as wide a margin on the pitch as the scoreline would suggest. Another learning experience for the ‘74 at this new level.
