Workington went top of the NPL West table after beating 1874 at Townfield.
1874 started brightly and were on top in the opening passages of the game, and they were rewarded as Jamie Reed finished well from in the 13th minute when a cross-cum-shot from the right was deflected into his path and evaded the goalkeeper.
The visitors equalised with a fine flowing move when a backheel found Brad Carroll who finished well to bring the scores level. Workington then took the lead through Reuben Jerome who was there to react quickest to a rebound and finish smartly past Tony Aghayere in the Greens’ goal.
Jamie Reed was on target again however in the 27th minute as the frantic action continued, heading home from a corner to bring the scores level.
Jerome then scored his 2nd to put the Reds in the lead again before half time, sliding in to tap home from a low cross in to the six yard box, and that, finally, was the end of the scoring in the first half.
The second half was much calmer as the Reds looked to stifle and strangle the game beyond the reach of a ’74 side that continued to probe but without much success, and the game still kept its end to end edge overall as a result
Workington put the game to bed in the 86th minute however, as Sam Smith arrived late to hammer home and seal the victory for the away side that were looking to avenge the two late goals that denied them a home win in the reverse earlier this season.
On this occasion then, the Reds took the points back up north with them, and with them the top of the table thanks to Marine’s defeat.
