1874 Northwich 2 – 1 Runcorn Town NWCFL Tuesday 29 September 15

1874 made a return to winning ways in the league after an impressive performance against a strong Runcorn Town side at the Barton Stadium.

The visitors started the game brightly, and forced an early freekick from the right of the 18 yard box, but it was swiftly dealt with by Conkie.

1874 started to gain control of the game and come close early on as the lively Ryan Jackson created two chances in quick succession, first Beadle was denied by some determined Runcorn defending and the second, Danny Thomas just couldn’t reach the wingers corner when all it needed was a touch.

The game continued to be end to end football with both teams having chances, Shanley testing Conkie twice within the opening exchanges.

Ryan Jackson continued to link up well with Ryan Stewart on the left hand side for 1874, and this combination created another good chance on the half hour mark however Mike Brandon couldn’t get his effort past the Town defender, who cleared easily.

It was from the clearance which produced Runcorn’s best chance of the half, Warren Bellew found space in the 1874 box after a long ball found the winger, his effort was saved by Matt Conkie who produced one for camera’s by acrobatically tipping over the cross bar for a corner.

The break through came on the stroke of half time, Matt Beadle received a ball from Matt Woolley, he then turned and lifted the ball deftly over the Town defence to find an on rushing Ryan Jackson, who showed great determination to reach the ball and slot home underneath Daniel Lever for 1-0.

The second half began as 1874 wanted it, confidence boosted, the hosts went to increase their lead, with Jackson setting in Beadle, who once again was denied by some impressive defending before he could shoot on goal.

1874 made it 2 on the 51st minute, an error in the Town defence allowed Captain Matt Woolley to steal the ball 30 yards from goal, he chose to slot Beadle in on goal, his effort was saved well by Lever, but his parry fell for Jackson, who made no mistake in smashing the ball home to complete his brace.

As 1874 looked for more, Town became more frustrated and the game become scrappy a number of silly fouls committed by both sides lead to the next goal of the game, in the 72nd minute, a freekick from Warren Bellew wasn’t dealt with, it bounced and bobbled around until Adam McKillop stabbed the ball goal bound, it softly rolled in the bottom left corner of Conkie’s goal to give the visitors a way back in to the game.

Town increased the pressure on 1874 now looking for the equaliser late on, and they nearly completed the come back on the 89th minute, as Shanley found space in on goal, but his effort was smothered by an on rushing Matt Conkie.
