OLDHAM BORO 0-2 1874 NORTHWICH FA VASE 1ST QUALIFYING ROUND 7TH SEPTEMBER 2014 after extra time

1874 left it late to secure their place in the second qualifying round of the FA Vase and a home tie against Wigan Robin Park, both goals coming in the final four minutes of extra time, the 90 minute score at Mossley’s Seel Park being deadlocked at 0-0.

Despite propping up the NWCFL First Division table Oldham Boro, who last season spoilt 1874’s opening day party and knocked 1874 out of the FA Vase, went close to reinforcing the view amongst the green clad supporters that they are 1874’s bogey team. A hard working outfit who never gave up chasing and harassing their opponents, Oldham never allowed an 1874 team containing 5 debutants to settle contributing to a disjoined scrappy performance in which possession was given away too easily.

Throughout the game 1874 enjoyed the greater share of the play and almost drew first blood in the fifth minute when Callum Woods ended a good run down the right wing by setting up Matty Ward whose shot flew across the face of the Oldham goal. On too many occasions an extra touch was taken or pass attempted which enabled Oldham’s defence to recover although Dave Short and Mark Darbyshire both went close in the first half.

The home side were dangerous on the counter attack with Adam Owens and Nathan Adams both drawing fine saves from 1874 goalkeeper James Fossdyke in the first half. Adams also hit the cross bar with a well struck shot.

Woods broke down the right in the opening minutes of the second half, cut inside only to see his shot deflected wide for a corner, which he met at the far post this time to see his shot cleared off the line. The same fate befell an Adams header from a corner at the other end moments later, Paul Connor doing the honours.

Oldham goalkeeper Tom Elford pulled off saves to deny Ryan Mitchell, Connor and Ward, while Short, Woods and Ward all narrowly missed the target.

1874 thought they had nicked a winner in the 90th minute, but a linesman flag decided otherwise. Elford failed to hold a powerful Matt Woolley drive, as Ward scrambled the ball into the net the linesman spotted an 1874 player offside.

Extra time started with Jamie Tandy setting Ward free down the left, racing into the area he fed Lee Jones whose shot was well saved by Elford. Both sides had further efforts from corners cleared off the line before Connor head a Lee Duckworth free kick inches wide. Rick Bailey swung in a cross from the left which was taken off Ward’s head with the goal at his mercy by Elford’s finger tips. Ward and Bailey combined to put Sakeel Abdullah in behind the Oldham defence; his shot hit the outside of the post.

With the prospect of a midweek replay at the Barton Stadium looming, 1874 finally broke the deadlock in the 116th minute. Ward chased down a back pass, disposed Elford and shot into an empty net. Victory was assured in the 119th minute when a Jones long ball found Ward unmarked on the edge of the Oldham area. As the covering defence came across he passed to Bailey, who drew the keeper, slipped the ball to Abdullah who fired home from 12 yards.
