BURSCOUGH 2-2 1874 NORTHWICH FA CUP EXTRA PRELIM 11TH AUGUST 2018
1874 Northwich recovered a two goal deficit to force at replay against Burscough in the FA Cup extra preliminary round.
A slow start by 1874 saw the home side race into a two lead scoring twice in the opening quarter of an hour.
Two minutes into the game Burscough attacked down their right wing from where a cross found Chad Whyte penalty area, unmarked he slotted the ball past 1874’s new goalkeeper Matt Green.
1874’s debutant goalkeeper tipped a Johnny Brannigan shot onto the bar and also saved well to deny Prince Expolo, while 1874 had shots blocked by desperate green shirted defenders throwing their bodies in the way of goal bound shots.
The home side doubled their lead in the 14th minute. Terry Cummings burst through the left side of the Clarets’ defence, rounded Green to slide the ball into the net from a tight angle.
A rough uneven Victoria Park pitch did not encourage passing football with 1874 struggling to settle into a pattern of play with numerous passes, or crosses, either not finding their intended recipient or being intercepted by hard working opponents.
1874 battled hard and started to come more into the game forcing several corners with Ryan Mitchell heading narrowly wide in the 30th minute before 1874 got themselves on the scoreboard in the 44th minute. Chasing a long ball captain Matt Woolley beat the on rushing Burscough keeper to the ball by a matter of inches to knock the ball into the net.
1874 came out in the second half with a renewed vigor and enjoyed the better of the second half possession and creating several chances to level the tie. Burscough goalkeeper Max Povey saved well with his feet to deny Scott McGowan and Woolley hit the cross bar. 1874 forced a number of corners, from one of which Jack Pritchard went close to hitting the target with a header.
Pushing men forward 1874 had to be careful not to be caught on the break. Whyte hit a shot just wide of the target in the first minute of the second half and Green pulled off a good save to deny Matty Ward in the 66th minute.
1874 drew level in the 74th minute. Callum Gardner received the ball on the edge of the area, he slipped it into the path of McGowan, last season’s top scorer calmly opened his account for this term slotting the ball home from 12 yards.
In the closing minutes McGowan sent a volley just wide of the target and several crosses into the Burscough box were just out of reach of 1874 attackers leaving both sides to reconvene at St Luke’s Barton Stadium on Tuesday night.
