MITCH’S LATE WINNER INCHES 74 CLOSER TO WEMBLEY
BY GARRY CLARKE
1874 NORTHWICH 1-0 CHICHESTER CITY FA VASE 5TH ROUND 3RD FEBRUARY 2018
AT WITTON ALBION
An 89th minute goal by Ryan Mitchell was all that separated 1874 Northwich and Chichester City at Wincham Pak. The solitary goal was enough to send the green and blacks through into the quarter finals of the Buildbase FA Vase.
The Southern Combination outfit started nervously allowing 1874 to go on the attack from the kick off. Their goalkeeper Anthony Ender fumbled a long range Scott McGowan shot in the second minute but recovered the ball before 1874 could take advantage. Two minutes later Ender was forced to save a Taylor Kennerley shot, before Kennerley shot wide of the target a few minutes later.
Having survived 1874’s initial salvo the visitors launched their first attack in the 16th minute. Catching a high ball played in to his area, Ender released his winger who raced down the left flank, he ball was played to Jimmy Wild who from a tight angle drove a shot goal wards which Gregg Hall beat away for a corner.
Much the busier of the two goalkeepers, Ender denied Adam Whitlock in the 25th minute and saved well to tip a McGowan effort round the post two minutes later.
City midfielder Keiron Hartley almost stunned Hall in the 40th minute when, out of nothing, he unleashed a shot from distance which rattled the 1874 crossbar.
A big physical side Chichester playing a more direct style started the second half strong and, although Hall was forced into a good save three minutes into the half from a corner, they did not cause too many problems for the home side’s defence.
1874 were guilty of giving the ball away too easily in the opening minutes of the second half soon regained control of the game.
Playing his first game since returning to the club, Shelton Payne, introduced as a substitute at the start of the second half, caused havoc in the Chichester goalmouth in the 51st minute. His cross from the left was initially missed by Ender, who then blocked McGowan’s acrobatic attempt. Fumbling the ball Ender recovered in time to prevent a following up Whitlock from forcing the ball into the net.
In the 75th McGowan intercepted an Ender clearance, he slipped the ball to Ryan Jackson whose shot was parried by Ender allowing Jack Lee to head the ball out for a corner. A few minutes later at the other end of the pitch Lee flashed a header wide of 1874’s goal from a corner.
In the closing minutes of an enthralling cup tie which kept the 580 strong crowd entertained and with extra time looming, Payne fired a shot across the face of Chichester’s goal, Ender struck out his foot to deflect the ball for a corner.
With players from both sides rushing to the near post Ryan Jackson’s delivery found Michell arriving late into the penalty area where, unmarked, he side footed the ball from six yards out creating pandemonium around Wincham Park as 1874 Northwich players and supporters celebrated reaching the quarter finals of the FA Vase for the first time in the club’s short history.
