1874 NORTHWICH 3-3 BOOTLE NWCFL PREMIER 26TH SEPTEMBER 2015

A stoppage time goal by Dilan Lomas grabbed a share of the spoils for 1874 Northwich at the end of an entertaining six goal thriller at the Barton Stadium against Bootle.

The visitors, whose recent run of good form had seen them rise to 3rd in the NWCFL Premier Division table, started the game strongly with Danny Thomas being forced to block a goal bound shot from William Smart in the opening minutes.

1874 settled down and launched several attacks of their own. Elliott Ledwards ended a good move by shooting just over the bar, while Stuarts, Wellstead and Tulloch, both drew fine saves from Bootle keeper Richie Cowdrey.

Bootle responded by forcing Matt Conkie to save from Michael Ordish while Kieran Haligan shot over the bar before Dominic Marie’s 27th minute angled drive broke the deadlock.

A minute later Wellstead combined well with Ryan Jackson in the Bootle area to force a corner, which Bootle failed to clear and with his back to goal Wellstead struck an over head kick against the bar.

In the 32nd minute Bootle again failed to clear their lines allowing Jackson to fire the ball through several bodies into the net.

Marie restored Bootle’s advantage two minutes later when he hit a fierce drive past Conkie from the edge of the area.

The returning Wellstead restored parity in the 38th minute sending Cowdrey the wrong way from the penalty spot after Ryan Jackson had been brought down. Moments before half time referee Chris Porter pointed to the penalty spot at the other end after Louis James had caught a Bootle player while trying to clear a corner. Marie completed his hat trick with a well taken penalty.

After five goals in the first half both defences tightened up in the second half with some desperate last ditch defending restricting their opponents chances in an open game in which play switched from end to end.

Conkie did well to save a Joel Powell diving header and tipped a Smart shot around the post. 1874’s best chance fell to Wellstead who fired a 70th minute shot inches wide of the post.

As the clock passed the 90 minute mark, Ryan Stewart launched a free kick into the Bootle area. Once again the ball was only half cleared; falling to Lomas on the edge of the area he smashed a volley through a packed penalty area to rescue a deserved point for 1874.
