Recap
1874 NORTHWICH 2-0 SQUIRES GATE NWCFL PREMIER 8TH AUGUST 2015
Two first half goals set 1874 Northwich on their way to 3 points on the opening day of the new season. With four debutants in green shirts 1874 dominated the first half on a lush Barton Stadium pitch but allowed their opponents back into the game in the second half.
The first half hour was one way traffic with Gate keeper Ben Fletcher being called into action to deny Ryan Jackson and pull off a double save to prevent Aiden Houghton from scoring, while from a corner Neil Chappell had a header cleared off the line.
Squires Gate started to come more into the game with Joshua Kay setting up Chris Anderson but he shot from outside the area was comfortably dealt with by Matt Conkie.
1874 hit the front in the 34th minute. Matty Ward swung in a corner from the right, Danny Thomas glided the ball through a packed six yard box into the net with a glancing header.
Houghton opened his 1874 account two minutes before half time. Receiving the ball from a throw in with his back to goal he turned, surged through the defence and slotted the ball past Fletcher.
After the break, 1874 continued to push forward in search of more goals. Several dangerous crosses were played into the Gate area but no 1874 players could get on the end of any of them. Man of the match Jackson was particularly prominent, drawing a fine save from Fletcher, having a shot deflected over the bar and clearing the bar by a matter of inches with a drive from 25 yards.
With Kay and Billy McKenna both having had shot saved by Conkie earlier in the half, as the game became stretched Squires Gate created several goal scoring opportunities in the closing stages of an entertaining game.
Terry Cummings won the race to a through ball lofting his shot over the advancing Conkie he narrowly missed the target, Ashley Rowan also shot wide and Michael Hall blasted the ball over the bar from the edge of the area.
