CAMMELL LAIRD 1907 1-6 1874 NORTHWICH HSL PREMIER 30TH DECEMBER 2016

1874 Northwich ended 2016 by bouncing back from their heaviest defeat of the season on Boxing Day by hitting Cammell Laird 1907 for six at Kirklands.

The result was never in doubt once 1874 took the lead in the 11th minute although Lairds, bottom of the table and without a league win all season, never gave up and gave their visitors a few scares creating several goal scoring opportunities.

After a cautious start by both teams, Tyler Edwards opened the scoring turning a low Tom Bailey cross into the Lairds net from close range. Creator turned scorer in the 30th minute when Bailey received the ball from a throw in 30 yards from goal, moving across field there was no danger until he unleashed a stunning drive which evaded Laird’s goalkeeper Dave Parkinson to double 1874’s advantage.

Parkinson did well to deny Sam Hind blocking a shot with his legs, while Dahrius Waldron fired a long range free kick just wide. Laird’s Joel Douglas twice shot narrowly wide of 1874’s goal, as well as blasting a shot over the bar in the first half.

The home side started the second half on the front foot without causing too many alarms but conceded a 3rd goal in the 56th minute, and incidentally the 100th of a disastrous league campaign.

Returning from suspension Paul Connor played a nice ball into the tireless Scott McGowan, who has he turned inside the penalty area was tripped by a Lairds defender. Bailey stepped forward sending Parkinson the wrong way with his spot kick.

Five minutes later a corner found its way to Hind at the back of the area, he drove the ball through a mass of bodies for 1874’s fourth goal.

Joe Byrne had a shot deflected wide and Hall saved smartly to deny Mark Bainbridge after the ball had been chipped over the 1874 defence.

Mark Jones combined with Connor in the 67th minute in the move/goal of the game/season.

Brining the ball out of defence Jones played the ball out wide to Connor on the right flank, playing further forward than usual Connor instantly swept the ball round the round the back of Laird’s defence into their penalty area. Having continued his run from the back, Jones met the ball and without breaking stride slotted it past a helpless Parkinson.

1874 could have had several more goals, but were denied by some desperate defending and a number of good saves by Parkinson, before the home side scored a consolation goal in the 89th minute. Jones and Hall combined to block and clear a Douglas effort off the line, but as the ball was played back into the area referee Nat Cox spotted an infringement by an 1874 defender and awarded a penalty. Lawrence Riley converted sending Hall the wrong way.

With the seconds ticking away and deep into stoppage time, Danny Thomas rose highest to head a corner goal wards where substitute Adam Whitlock claimed the final touch steering the ball into the net.
