Recap
74 travelled the relatively short distance to play in the derby against our old foes, Runcorn Linnets. With a healthy crowd in attendance, our hosts took an early lead in the 5th minute, a free kick which snook in off the post. The remainder of the first half was an edgy affair but with five minutes remaining, 1874 drew level thanks to the quick reactions from Mackenzie O’Neill. Joe Woolley’s terrific strike was parried by their Keeper and Kenzy reacted quickest to volley in the net.
Overall, 1874 edged the second half. Twenty minutes into the second period, we earned a penalty when Kenzy was fouled by the Keeper. Unfortunately, Matt Woolley was unable to convert, denied by a great save from their Keeper and the follow up was sent over the bar. With 20 minutes to go, Runcorn found themselves 2-1 up, as the ball was turned in from a corner. With the clock ticking on to full time, 74 continued to press and earned their just reward in the 91st minute. A wonderful, pinpoint cross from Jamal Crawford was met by Jack Irlam and his bullet header gave the Linnets Keeper no chance. A dramatic moment, which was thoroughly deserved and enjoyed by our players and supporters alike. A draw was a fair result, and our squad deserves much credit for bouncing back after a difficult previous week.
