DOUBLES FROM HIND AND WHITLOCK GIVE 1874 COMFORTABLE DERBY WIN

In a very competitive game at the St Lukes Barton Stadium on Easter Monday it was the “visitors” 1874 Northwich who came out comfortable winners and so gained revenge for their Boxing Day defeat at the hands of their landlords Winsford United
The large crowd were treated to an action-packed derby game with lots of chances, five goals and good displays by both goalkeepers.

1874 were without Mark Jones who is still recovering from an injury and his position in the back four was taken by Craig Farnworth – making his first appearance since the middle of February.

1874 started well and couldn’t have wished for a better opening as they took the lead in the 1st minute thanks to Sam Hind finishing off an excellent move involving Matt Woolley and Tom Bailey after the latter passed t Hind who made no mistake. In truth the provider – Bailey – should have increased 74’s lead five minutes later but again after some good build-up play the strikers’ effort hit the bar when it seemed easier to score.

However, it was certainly not one way-traffic as Lee Duckworth’s men tried everything to get on level terms but they too missed a couple of chances as well as being thwarted by Greg Hall making a couple of fine saves to accompany his safe handling of all crosses throughout.

Winsford had a number of chances and from the best one Scott Taylor should have done better with his effort and this was followed by Jordan Johnson creating a good chance for himself but his effort was deflected for a corner.
74 were looking to advance at every opportunity and they had the luxury of two good attacking fullbacks – Matty Russell and Paul Connor – who both pushed forward to help create chances and the best chance came on 27 minutes when Connor send Joe Woolley through but he scuffed his effort when well placed.

However, Winsford themselves were always looking to get forward and after 32 minutes they got the equalising goal thanks in part to some poor defending but also to the alert Nathan Cotterell, who received a cross for the right, controlled well and turned to fire home from six yards
Before the interval both sides had good efforts to nose in front but 1874’s fine move on the right ended with Joe Wolley shooting wide whilst at the other end Kyle Riley created a good opportunity for himself but Hall was alert to save Riley’s well hit shot at the expense of a corner which came to nothing as did another corner again following a good save by Hall.

The second half followed a similar pattern to the opening half with both sides trying to get forward at every opportunity whilst, at the same time, not allowing too much room for their opponents to create clear cut chances.

Something had to give and fortunately for 1874 it was them who created a good goal scoring opportunity which was gratefully accepted by Sam Hind who calmly scored his second goal firing with ease past Green in the home goal. Clearly both sides needed to score the next goal in a game that continued to swing from end to end but in fairness 1874 always looked the more likely to score and so it proved when in the 74th minute the busy Sam Hind played a pass perfectly into the path of substitute Adam Whitlock who advanced into the area before finishing well for his second goal of the season to take his side into a 3-1 lead.
And Whitlock didn’t have too long to wait for another goal as he made it 4-1 in the 86th minute with a sublime finish after good work again by Hind and Bailey to create the chance from 12 yards out on the left

So revenge for 1874 was gained and in truth richly deserved for a good all round performance
