PADIHAM 0-7 1874 NORTHWICH NWCFL PREMIER 2ND APRIL 2016

Seven was too much for Padiham as a rampant 1874 Northwich brought to an end the home side’s six game run in spectacular fashion. Recording their highest score in the NWCFL, 1874 hit seven goals past their host’s goalkeeper, without whom Padiham’s loss would have been much greater. Matt Beadle netted five times, the first player to hit that tally for 1874, and Stuart Wellstead twice in an outstanding all round display with star performers in claret all over the pitch.

Having twice gone close to scoring in the opening five minutes, Beadle scored for the 5th game running breaking the deadlock in the 13th minute. Ryan Jackson held off the challenge of a defender to set up Beadle, who steadied himself before shooting into the net off another defender who tried to block his shot.

Beadle made it 2-0 in the 20th minute reacting first he headed home after the ball rebounded off the cross bar, Padiham keeper Jamie Bradley having tipped a header from a corner onto the bar. Three minutes later Beadle turned provider, back heeling the ball into the path of Wellstead who fired a firm shot through Bradley’s legs.

With George Riley pulling the strings from midfield, 1874 were dominating proceedings laying siege to the home goal. Riley fires a long range shot just over the bar, while a number of other attempts were also off target and Bradley pulled off several fine saves to keep 1874 out. However, he was unable to prevent Beadle completing his hat-trick in the 39th minute and notching his 4th in the 45th minute, both headers from close range.

Padiham’s only goal scoring opportunity of the first half came in the 25th minute when Aaron Taylor scooped the ball over the bar from six yards out.

After the half time break Padiham came more into the game, Garry Hunter smashed a shot against the bar, while both Kieran Pickup and Jake Townsend sent shots just wide of the target. Apart from these isolated attempts the home side never threatened Greg Hall’s goal as they were kept at bay by a solid display of defending by the 1874 rearguard.

Never in danger of dropping points, Ian Street’s men continued to create chances throughout the second half. Several shots went narrowly wide of the target, while a surging Neil Chappell run into the Padiham area was only halted by a perfectly timed last ditch tackle as the 1874 captain was poised to shoot. Bradley also pulled off several saves in the second period.

Wellstead grabbed his second goal of the afternoon in the 63rd minute when he smashed the ball home from eight yards after Beadle had cushioned a Jackson cross into his path.

The final word in a memorable game belonged to Beadle, whose diving header in the 86th minute converted a pin point accurate cross from substitute Robbie Simpson, the first player from the club’s under 21 team to appear in a league game.
