MEN UNITED CUP 2ND ROUND
24TH OCTOBER 2015

1874 Northwich cruised into the 3rd round of the Men United Cup on the back of a dominant second half performance beating Winsford United 4-0 at the Barton Stadium.

A frenetic opening period in which neither sidewere able to stamp their authority on proceedings set the tone for a first half of little goalmouth action and few chances as both teams relied too much on playing long balls. Shots from outside penalty areas by Winsford’s Dale Jennings and 1874’s Matty Ward were saved by Matt Conkie and Dale Latham. 1874 had a claim for a penalty turned down by referee Daniel Hitchell, who waved play on after Mike Brandon went down under a challenge from Ryan Eisett.

Having survived a scare from a corner in the 30th minute, Winsford started to gain the upper hand. Former 1874 stalwart Lee Duckworth swung a couple of dangerous free kicks into the 1874 area; both were dealt with by Conkie.

With Winsford committed to attack they left themselves short at the back and were caught out in the 40th minute. Thwarting another attack, 1874 quickly played the ball up field; Matt Beadle flicked the ball onto Brandon who set Stuart Wellstead away. Drawing the remaining defenders to him, he slipped the ball back inside to Brandon. The marauding midfielder advanced to the edge of the area from where he slotted the ball past Latham.

1874 doubled their lead in the first minute of the second half, Beadle sweeping home Ward’s cross from close range.

As their tenants started to dominate the game creating several half chances, Winsford posed little threat although James Rothwell went close with a header from a free kick and Kyle Riley drew a save from Conkie.

Already comfortable, 1874 put the game beyond their landlords in the 65th minute. Louis James chipped the ball into the path of Wellstead whose cross was blocked by a Winsford defender who could only divert the ball into the path of Beadle. He took the ball past the last defender and drilled a shot into the far side of the net from an acute angle.

With four minutes to go 1874 applied the icing to the cake with a 4th goal. Aaron Kirk played a pass in behind the Winsford full back, Dan Crawley pulled the ball back across the goal, Wellstead slid in at the far post to tuck the ball home and complete a comprehensive victory.
