CAMMELL LAIRD 1907 0 V 1 1874 NORTHWICH NWCFL PREMIER 11TH AUGUST 2015

This was never going to be an easy game for 1874 and so it proved as Ian Street’s side had to work very hard to secure their second win of the season.

There was just one change from Saturday’s starting line up as Arron Kirk started in midfield with Martin Hill dropping to the bench.

The home side started well and took the game to their visitors and in the opening five minutes, Danny Thomas was called upon to make vital interceptions to avert the danger.

1874 had their first effort on goal after 15 minutes as Ryan Jackson shot wide after good work by Aidan Haughton. Minutes later, Kirk and Jackson combined well on the right hand side but the final cross into the box just evaded Matty Ward.

Cammell Laird were a determined side and they came more and more into the game as the midfield battle for control intensified. After 25 minutes they had their first real chance when an excellent long ball from defence found Foy in space on the right flank, but his attempt went well over the crossbar from wide out.

Just two minutes later another good move by the hosts nearly brought some reward but the alert Thomas at the heart of the 1874 defence saved the day with a good header at the expense of a corner.

Then on the half hour Mark Matt Woolley sent a great long pass out to the right that nearly produced a goal but Chappell’s effort was well saved at the expense of a corner – from which Matty Ward shot at goal but without the right result.

1874 looked keen to stay on the attack but Cammell Laird were also always looking to score and once again Danny Thomas came to his side’s rescue with another timely piece of defending. From the resulting corner, Murphy headed over the bar when perhaps he should have at least hit the target.

The hosts then had a good spell of possession that enabled them to impress as an attacking team and their football should really have had better results, but Clare and Murphy couldn’t turn their chances into goals.

For the final few minutes of the first half it was 1874’s turn to look positive and goal hungry. Woolley and Chappell tended to be at the forefront of this hearty spell of play as they both tried to win the ball and get it out to Jackson as soon as possible for him to run at defenders and this he did on three quick occasions. From the last of these the much-needed goal arrived when Jackson’s turn and cross resulted in captain Chappell being in the right place to guide the ball into the far corner of the net. Half –Time 0-1

After the break the home side came out determined to get back in the game and they created several chances but Thomas and Lomas together with keeper Conkie were up to the challenge of maintaining their clean sheet.

However, ten minutes into the half and 1874 suffered a major blow when Thomas had to leave the field with a leg injury. He was replaced by Steve McNichol.

The game was finely poised and nobody in the strong following of 1874 supporters could have been totally happy with the narrow single goal lead and perhaps Ian Street felt the same!?

Sometimes the best style of defence is to attack and certainly in this game that is what happened, because as Cammell Laird pressed for their equaliser they began to leave gaps which 1874 might have capitalised on. Indeed with 15 minutes left a second goal almost arrived but good work and an excellent cross from Jackson evaded all of 1874’s onrushing players including Michael Brandon who minutes earlier had come on as a substitute for Haughton.

On 81 minutes the substitution almost paid dividends when another fine move by 1874 ended with Brandon seeing his header rebound from a post. Woolley followed up and forced the ball over the line however his celebrations were curtailed by the raised flag of an Assistant Referee. Unfortunately the home keeper sustained a bad finger injury and had to leave the field. His substitute did make two good saves before the final whistle went which allowed the 1874 following to vent their obvious satisfaction to the all-round sterling performance given by the 1874 players.

So two games, two wins and two clean sheets but you won’t see the manager getting ‘two’ excited just yet!

After the game the Cammell Laird Match sponsor named the Lairds defender Steve Ferrigan as their Man of the Match and 1874’s Ryan Jackson as the 1874 man of the Match
