COMFORTABLE WIN FOR 1874 – Tuesday 11th April

1874 NORTHWICH 2 v 0 MAINE ROAD

Under the guidance of Paul Bowyer and Wayne Goodison for their sixth game in charge 1874 enjoyed a comfortable win over a spirited Maine Road side and in the process of doing so a clean sheet was achieved for the first time since the 2 0 win at home to Barnoldswick at the beginning of February.

1874 started brightly with the lively Joe Woolley prominent immediately on the right flank as his side looked to gain the early initiative and in the fifth minute, after good work by Woolley and Bove, 1874 should have took taken the lead but unfortunately Sam Hind missed the opportunity as his shot was weak and easily saved by the visiting keeper.

Somewhat ironically this miss could have had a “double effect” as five minutes later Maine Road were awarded a penalty when after a good break by them out of defence and up field finished with the referee the rather generously awarding a penalty as he adjudged a hand ball by Hind.

Fortunately though Greg Hall saved the penalty well as he dove to his left to smother the ball.

Penalty? You decide.

1874 then started to grow in confidence as they tried to play some flowing football even though understandably the playing conditions did tend to hamper this on occasions. Maine Road were always a threat when they broke forward but the 74 defence, well marshalled by Ryan Mitchell, dealt comfortably with everything so allowing Hall to really just being available to collect crosses which he did easily

After the interval the game followed much the same pattern as 1874 looked for that all-important second goal whilst Maine Road needed an equaliser whilst they couldn’t really afford to go two down. Consequently both keepers were relatively unneeded for long spells although just on the hour mark Martin Owen had a great chance to equalise but his header was straight at Hall.

Just four minutes later and it was a similar story at the other end of the field as Jordon Bove had a good opportunity to score but his header lacked any real power and was easily saved.

However, just five minutes later and the much-needed second goal of the game arrived when Man of the Match Ryan Mitchell headed home an excellent deep cross from the right flank by Paul Connor.

This goal obviously allowed 1874 more freedom to look for another goal whilst at the same time the visiting side were somewhat deflated with their forlorn task of getting back into the game.

But there were no further goals although Sam Hind and Joe Woolley both had good chances whilst leading scorer Tom Bailey saw his shot well saved in the last few minutes.
