Recap

While manager Ian Street was absent his able deputies, Paul Bowyer and Lee Duckworth, presided over a record breaking 9-0 win as 1874 Northwich eased into the FA Vase First Round.

Currently residing in the lower reaches of the NWCFL First Division table, having been relegated from the Premier Division at the end of last season, Wigan Robin Park were no match for 1874, who opened the scoring in the 9th minute. Scoring his first goal since returning to the club, Stuart Wellstead rose unchallenged at the near post to head home from a Jamie Tandy corner.

As 1874 started to dominate the game, Matt Beadle had a shot saved by Patrick Hamid, an outfield player donning the Wigan goalkeeping outfit for the day, Matty Ward fired a shot over the bar and Lee Duckworth shot wide before on a rare Wigan visit into 1874 territory Andrew Simm’s shot was easily saved by Matt Conkie.

Beadle doubled 1874’s advantage in the 24th minute cutting in from the left to shoot past Hamid before nine minutes later turning provider crossing from the right for Wellstead to volley home on the turn.

Five minutes later Ward scored 1874’s fourth when Hamid was unable to hold his shot from the edge of the area. 1874 went into the break leading 5-0 after Beadle cut inside a defender five minutes before the interval to shoot home.

Ward and Ryan Mitchell went close to scoring in the opening minutes of the second half before Neil Chappell scored his first goal for 1874, smashing a drive from outside the area past a helpless Hamid in the 56th minute.

Man of the match Beadle completed his hat trick, the first by an 1874 Northwich player in a competitive game, heading in a Wellstead cross in the 59th minute, and a minute later scored his fourth forcing the ball into the net during a goalmouth scramble. Ward completed the scoring in the 75th minute hammering the ball home from the edge of the area after Wigan only half cleared a Lee Duckworth cross.

In the closing minutes Conkie ensured 1874 kept their 5th consecutive clean sheet saving comfortably saving Connor Murphy’s shot. It is now 505 minutes since 1874 last conceded a goal.
