1874 COME FROM BEHIND TO SNATCH CUP WIN
by Garry Clarke
 PADIHAM 2-3 1874 NORTHWICH     MACRON CUP 1ST ROUND – 1ST OCTOBER 2016

A second half revival saw 1874 Northwich come from behind to defeat Padiham and progress in to the next round of the Macron League Challenge Cup.
Despite a lackluster disjoined first half performance which saw too many passes fail to reach their intended target and balls into the Padiham area cleared easily, 1874 went closest to opening the scoring in a scrappy opening twenty minutes.

Sam Hind headed a Sam Hare free kick onto the Padiham bar in the 14th minute. Four minutes later he drilled a low cross into the home side’s six yard box, which just evaded Scott McGowan before Padiham defender Tom Bradley scooped the ball over the bar.  From the resulting corner Padiham goalkeeper Mike Donlan blocked Ryan Mitchell’s header and then saved the follow up shot bravely amidst a sea of bodies.

As the half progressed Padiham belying their lowly league position started to gain the upper hand. Greg Hall was forced to save well to keep out an Aaron Turner shot but was unable to stop a powerful header from James Dean opening the scoring in the 34th minute. Dean caused the 1874 rearguard problems throughout the first half and nearly bagged a second in the closing minutes but could not beat Hall with a low shot.
After a half time talking to, in the proverbial game of two halves, 1874 playing with a renewed vigor and a more upbeat tempo dominated the second half creating numerous chances, but still had to be wary of being caught on the break by the home side.
In the opening minutes of the second half Hind smashed a shot from the edge of the area against the underside of the bar, following up Tom Bailey could only steer the ball wide.

Hall pulled off a good save to deny Taylor in the 55th minute after good build up play by Padiham down the left wing.  A minute later Matt Russell unleashed a long range shot which screamed past Donlan into the Padiham net via the underside of the bar.
Russell was the architect of the next goal. He slid the ball through the Padiham defence into the path of McGowan, who as he entered the penalty area was brought down in the act of shooting.  Referee Nat Cox pointed to the penalty spot, from where Bailey sent Donlan the wrong way to put 1874 in front in the 68th minute.

A few minutes later Dean latched onto a miss placed back pass, as he was bearing down on goal he was dispossessed  by a perfectly timed last ditch tackle by Mitchell before he could get his shot away.
In the 80th minute captain Matt Woolley play a long diagonally ball onto the chest of Hind, who controlled the ball before volleying past Donlan from outside the area to clinch 1874’s place in the second round and a home tie with First Division AFC Blackpool.
However, there was still time for a scare. Kieran Pickup raced down the left wing, crossed to Taylor at the far post who nodded the ball down to Mark Coyne who drilled the ball home.
