1874 NORTHWICH 3-1 PONTEFRACT COLLIERIES BUILDBASE FA VASE 4TH ROUND
7TH JANUARY 2018 AT WITTON ALBION

1874 Northwich will play in the 5th round of the Buildbase FA vase for the first time in their history after booking their place in the last 16 by beating Pontefract Collieries at Wincham Park.

The Northern Counties East side made 1874 work hard for their 3-1 victory in front of a club record crowd of 625 on an emotional afternoon as spectators paid their respects to chairman Paul Stockton.

A big physical side Pontefract started the game at 100mph launching early attacks on the 1874 goal before the home side could get into their stride. However, as the first half progressed 1874 came more into the game with Mark Jones forcing a save from Pontefract keeper Ryan Musselwhite. Jones also scooped a shot on the turn over the bar and Scott McGowan volleyed inches wide of the target after running onto a long clearance from keeper Greg Hall.

Mikey Dunn clipped the top of 1874’s bar with an effort and Mark Whitehouse fired into the side netting, before Musselwhite was forced to scramble across his goal to prevent Taylor Kennerley from scoring after the keeper had miss hit a clearance straight to Jones.

1874 broke the deadlock with the last kick of the first half when a minute into stoppage time Jones forced the ball home from close range after Musselwhite failed to hold a Sam Hind cross.

The second half followed a similar pattern to the first half with 1874’s rearguard soaking up the pressure and repelling Pontefract’s attacks as the Yorkshiremen pumped high balls into the 1874 area, while Northwich’s more nimble attackers looked to exploit space further up field.

Vaughan Redford ended a good run down the right by slipping the ball to Kane Reece who fired over the bar.

Just after the hour mark of an absorbing cup tie, Musselwhite saved from McGowan who fired off his shot as he was being hauled back by Jimmy Williams.

In the 65th minute, Pontefract’s Eli Hay received the ball with his back to goal and from outside the area hit a shot on the turn which was tipped around the post by a flying save from Hall.

The 1874 custodian, who had commanded his area all afternoon cleanly taking high balls under pressure, was unable to stop the visitors from equalizing in the 69th minute when Whitehouse struck a free kick out of his reach.

1874 struck back almost immediately. Hind had a shot cleared off the line by Williams and McGowan’s shot deflected off Cody Cormack looping over keeper and bar. The lead was regained in the 78th minute when McGowan met a pin point accurate Hind cross to guide a header underneath Musselwhite.

With Pontefract pushing more men forward in an attempt to force extra time, substitute Kazim Waite-Jackson effortlessly carried the ball from the half way line into the Pontefract area, where as he shimmed round Musselwhite the keeper’s outstretched leg sent him tumbling to the ground.

Referee Michael Barlow pointed to the penalty spot, Musselwhite recovered to save McGowan’s spot kick but was powerless to prevent 1874’s leading goalscorer netting his 20th goal of the season from the rebound.
