Recap

In a battle of 4th vs 5th, it was 1874 who came out on top after a 1-0 win courtesy of a Stuart Wellstead strike just after half time.

The game started off in the balance until 5 minutes in, when Matthew Beadle curled a free kick narrowly wide of the post giving the Congleton stopper, Michael Dixon, a scare.

In the 17th minute, Dixon made a wonderful save to deny Brandon. A free kick was curled in across the centre of the box which was met powerfully by Brandon, his header looked destined for the corner of the goal but the keeper got a strong hand to it to turn it behind.

Half an hour in to the game, 1874 came close once again to taking the lead. Neil Chappell advanced with a strong run in the midfield, he threaded a ball through the Congleton defence and as Matthew Beadle raced clear and lifted it over Dixon, the ball looked to be heading for the net, but it rebounded off the post and was cleared by the defenders.

HALF TIME – 1874 Northwich 0-0 Congleton Town

1874 began the half pushing Congleton back, looking for the opening goal. In the 52nd minute the Greens found the break through, Jack Woolley collected a pass from Beadle on the edge of the area, he played a through ball to Wellstead who lashed a left footed effort past a helpless Dixon in to the top left hand corner of the goal.

Only moments later, Beadle once again caused issues for Congleton, he put a delightful ball back across the area however Stuart Wellstead couldn’t get over the top of his header and he narrowly put it over the crossbar.

Dixon produced another good save on the hour mark, Beadle found Wellstead advancing on goal and his placed shot was parried well by the keeper to keep the score at just 1-0.

As Congleton began to press looking for an equaliser, Northwich had a chance to seal it on the 78th minute. Brandon pulled the ball back straight across the goalmouth but Matthew Beadle just couldn’t turn it home.
