Recap

A goal in each half gave 1874 a comfortable win on a cold Tuesday night at the Barton Stadium ensuring the Greens bounced back from a disappointing defeat on Saturday in style. A number of changes were made to the 1874 side, which saw Ben Woods make his debut and Matty Ward return.

The game started with Cammell Laird just edging the play, pressing 1874 high up the pitch and not allowing the Greens to get in to their rhythm, the closest the visitors came to the 1874 goal was a cross from Cairns landed harmlessly over Greg Hall’s cross bar.
A high number of offside decisions went against 1874 as they started to attack the visitors, Beadle, Jackson and Ward all being denied one-on-one chances with the goalkeeper.

Woods on his debut, was showing no signs of nerves and in the 30th minute, he advanced past 3 Cammell Laird players to be brought down for a freekick. From the resulting freekick, the ball was headed away only as far as Chappell, who was brought down by the Laird defender on the edge of the area, which resulted in a freekick and a yellow card for the defender.

Moments later, the visitors were reduced to 10 men when Ryan Jackson advanced with the ball for 1874, but he was brought down with a lunge from Paul Foy. From the freekick, Ben Woods found Beadle on the edge of the Laird penalty area, he turned and played a delightful through ball to Stuart Wellstead who composed himself and fired past Langley to give 1874 the lead before the break.

The second half began with 1874 extending their lead, Ben Woods combined with Jackson, Woods’ cross found Beadle who powered a fantastic header past Langley before he could react, putting 1874 in to a comfortable lead.

1874 pushed for more with Ryan Jackson firing over on the 68th minute, after Beadle found him on the edge of the area in space. Shortly after, Woods’ cross was spilt by Langley but Stuart Wellstead couldn’t put the ball in the net due to immense pressure from the Laird defenders.

Northwich saw the game out and ensured a good 3 points and clean sheet would be the reward for a much improved performance.
