WITTON ALBION 0-3 1874 NORTHWICH MID CHESHIRE DISTRICT SENIOR CUP FINAL 18TH APRIL 2016

Captain Matt Woolley proudly lifted the Mid-Cheshire District Senior Cup at Wincham Park after his team had completely outplayed their Evostik League First Division North hosts in their first ever cup final.

1874 Northwich got off to a flying start catching Witton Albion cold taking the lead in the 3rd minute. Dilan Lomas’s long ball down the flank set Tyler Edwards racing along the left wing, he swung in a cross which found Matt Beadle at the far post, 1874’s leading goal scorer plated a firm header past the helpless Witton keeper.

Six minutes later 1874 were two up. Witton failed to clear a corner allowing Ryan Jackson to return the ball into the danger area where Craig Farnworth rose highest to flick a hearer into the corner of the net.

After being dazed by 1874’s whirlwind start, Witton started to feel their way into the game forcing a couple of corners and sending in a few shots from distance at 1874’s goal. Anything which they threw towards 1874’s goal was dealt with comfortably and confidently by Greg Hall. 1874’s custodian pulled off a brilliant save in the closing minutes of the first half. Witton pumped a long ball down the middle of the field, Danny Andrews hit a first time shot from 12 yards which Hall diving to his right diverted behind for a corner.

Moments later Witton keeper Ryan Neild did well to block a Beadle header from a corner at point blank range.

Witton started the second half with a renewed vigor but could not find a way past a resolute 1874 team who weathered the early storm and regained the upper hand.

A sweeping length of the field move in which Edwards, Beadle and Jackson combined ended with Jackson being forced wide and shooting into the side netting from a tight angle. Stuart Wellstead and Woolley both had shots saved by Neild, who also pulled off a stunning double save to keep out a Wellstead free kick and deny Beadle from the rebound.

With time ticking away, Beadle twisting and turning Witton’s Theo Chrisokhou inside out prompting the defender to trip him inches inside the penalty area. Referee Jake Nield pointed to the penalty spot, Beadle picked himself up to convert the penalty with aplomb.

In the dying minutes Andrews fired in a firmly struck shot which Hall saved well to complete an outstanding team performance in which all eleven starters could have been selected as man of the match and made a mockery of the difference in leagues between the two teams.

Seconds later referee Nield blew the final whistle to bring to an end a one sided game and spark scenes of unbridled joy as players, management, officials and supporters joined together to celebrate on an historic night for 1874 Northwich FC.
