RICK BAILS OUT 1874
BY GARRY CLARKE

1874 Northwich returned to the summit of the Hallmark Security League Premier Division, above Runcorn Town on goal difference, having snatched a last gasp victory at West Didsbury & Chorlton scoring with a goal in the 92nd minute.

Games between these two sides are usually full of incident and talking points, this encounter was no different with the 289 strong crowd going home having been thoroughly entertained. The home side dominated the first half going close to scoring numerous times, while 1874 found chances few and far between. The second half was a mirror image of the first with 1874 dominating proceedings.

1874 were grateful to goalkeeper Greg Hall for going into the half time break on level terms. He pulled off a hat-trick of outstanding saves to deny Jon Poizer, as well as saving well to keep out efforts from Joe Shaw and Ashley Woods. West almost had the ball in the 1874 net in a 38th minute goalmouth scramble, following a corner, during which several goal bound attempts were blocked by Hall and his colleagues.

1874’s best opportunities in the first half fell to Scott McGowan who shot wide in the 10th minute and over the bar in the 23rd minute, while Tom Bailey fired a free kick wide in the 45th minute.

A competitive game played in a good spirit without a bad tackle erupted in the 42nd minute when West’s Shaw fouled Sam Hare from behind, which saw Shaw shown a yellow card. Shaw and Hare then clashed squaring up to each other, referee Kristian Silcock upgraded Shaw’s punishment to a red card, and the same fate also befell Hare.

The extra space created benefited 1874 after the break as they dominated the game passing the ball with more purpose and creating chances.

West goalkeeper Hayden Buckley-Smith, a virtual spectator in the first half, was called into action several times in the opening 15 minutes of the second half. He tipped a Stuart Wellstead shot around the post, held onto a powerful McGowan free kick and saved well at point blank range to keep out a McGowan header.

1874 had to be careful not to be caught on the break by a lively West outfit which never gave up. Hall had to be alert to race from his goal in the 70th minute to beat Woods to a through ball.

1874 kept pushing forward in search of a winning goal but were repelled by some resolute defending, while Buckley-Smith did well to block a Mark Jones shot from close range.

As the game was entering its final minutes West defender Anthony Potts gave away a needless free kick just outside the right hand side of the penalty area. Substitute Rick Bailey, only introduced to the fray five minutes earlier, delivered a left footed free kick which flew over the mass of bodies in the penalty area, out of Buckley-Smith’s reach and into the far side of the net.
