CLINICAL BEARS KNOCK 1874 OFF TOP SPOT – by Jack Owen

1874 Northwich FC 1 v 3 Congleton Town

A near perfect away performance from Cheshire neighbours, Congleton Town, caught the Greens cold on Tuesday evening, inflicting only a third defeat of the season and so allowing Runcorn Town and Atherton Collieries to overtake 74 in the League table

In the opening exchanges, 1874 tested Heywood – the visiting keeper, when Sam Hind was played in on goal, he tried to place a shot across the goalkeeper however Heywood was equal to it as he saved well to deny 74 an early goal

1874 had lots of possession but the Congleton rearguard was well marshalled and up to their task of trying to thwart the 74 attackers. Tom Bailey came close to opening the scoring when he clipped a cross-cum-shot which went narrowly over the crossbar with the keeper beaten

Congleton dealt well with the early 1874 pressure and created their first chance of the game just after the 25 minute mark, when a ball in from the right wing found Scott Sephton who fired home to give the visitors the lead against the run of play

Then just over 5 minutes later, Congleton doubled their lead, as another quick and incisive counter attack saw Norman Willis turn the ball home after a rebound found its way to the midfielder in the 1874 area

HALF TIME: 0-2

1874 finally broke through the Congleton resistance when Tom Bailey tried to place his shot into the bottom corner of the goal. Heywood could only parry back the ball into the box, where Scott McGowan was waiting to pounce and he comfortably tapped the ball home.

If there was a hope now that 1874 could repeat the feats of their remarkable comeback that they achieved in the reverse fixture, then those hopes were dashed in the 63rd minute when, Jack Pritchard fired home from the edge of the area after 1874 failed to clear the ball.

In an effort to try and force more chances Manager, Ian Street, introduced more attack-minded players and one of them – Dougie Carroll did have a good opportunity but his effort was straight at the keeper to allow a comfortable save whilst Sam Hind later saw his headed effort denied by a brilliant clearance as the ball was heading for the back of the net

The final whistle sounded to record an impressive and fully deserved first win for Congleton ensured their first win over 1874.
