1874 NORTHWICH 0-3 ATHERTON COLLIERIES
BUILDBASE FA VASE 2ND RD 12TH NOV 2016

Scoring three times in the second half Atherton Collieries made comfortable progress into the third round of the Buildbase FA Vase and at the same time spoilt 1874 Northwich’s 4th birthday party.

The all Hallmark Security League Premier Division encounter pitted two of the Division’s top five against each other, and in an even first half there was nothing to choose between the two sides as play switched from end to end.

Ryan Jackson, Scott McGowan and Rick Bailey all drew saves from Colls’ keeper Adam Reid in the opening half while Matt Russell, Mark Jones and Tom Bailey were narrowly wide with their efforts. Colls’ Mark Truffas fired two early shots wide of the target, while Russell was forced to head away a dangerous corner and Ryan Mitchell produced an excellent tackle to end a Gareth Peet run as he entered the 1874 area.

For all the attacking play in the first stanza neither side really looked like scoring until seven minutes into the second half.

After McGowan had drawn a fine save from Reid with a long range free kick and Colls’ Vincent Bailey had shot inches wide in the opening minutes of the second half Jordan Cover struck in the 52nd minute. Racing onto a long ball played over the 1874 defence he unleashed a powerful shot into the top of the 1874 net despite Greg Hall getting a hand on the ball he was unable to stop its progress.

Seven minutes later Cover turned provider laying the ball off to Ben Hardcastle after displaying some tricky foot work in the 1874 area, allowing Hardcastle to drill the ball home from ten yards.

The visitors now in control of the game, were content to sit back and strike on the counter attack taking advantage of the space left at the back by 1874 as the home side pushed forward in search of route back into the game.

For all their efforts 1874 could not get on the scoreboard the closest they came was in the 87th minute when McGowan rounded the Colls’ defence and fired in a shot which was well saved by Reid.

Colls had made the game safe in the 75th minute when Truffas raced onto a long ball, his shot was saved by Hall, but the 1874 goalkeeper could not hold onto the ball which rebounded into the path of Cover who calmly slotted the ball into the net.
Truffas had curled a shot just wide moments before Cover’s second goal and in the closing minutes set up Hardcastle, whose shot was blocked and scrambled away for a corner, and in the 90th minute Hardcastle’s goal bound shot was half blocked by Mitchell and eventually saved by Hall.
